Day 1 of 28: San Diego to Julian, CA
76 miles—8,652 feet of climbing—Beautiful Weather
What a way to start! Today was the most climbing I’ve ever done in one day—8,652 feet. The first 20 miles out of San Diego were busy with traffic, but after that it was nothing but steady climbing and beautiful views. The last 20 miles were mostly downhill and one of my favorite rides to date. Big thanks to Steve, who has done this ride before and helped lead us out of the city.
For a guy from flat SE Michigan, this was a huge challenge, but I’m grateful for the support and excited to be here. It was helpful recieving text messages during the ride from friends and family—I can read them on my Garmin. Technical difficulties (me) prevented the gps from working at the start but got it going after the 1st stop. Tomorrow brings more descending, then into the desert, 90’s, and about 90 miles. Distances will start ramping up from there. Julian is a quaint little town. Had a great dinner with a group from the ride—so fortunate to be able to do this—so pleased with today—many blessings!
