Day 4 of 28: Blythe, CA to Wickenburg, AZ

Today was a rough ride at times—116 miles in some serious heat. We have had mostly favorable winds so far, but there were some good head winds for a 20 mile stretch today. I felt tested today, but made it to Arizona—1 state down! I rode with several different people today for short periods of time, and rode a lot by myself which I do enjoy at times.

After the ride, I switched out my saddle—actually brought 3 with me. There is no easy way to get your bum in shape for a ride like this. I have ridden over 6,000 miles this year to help prepare keeping that part of my body in tact as best as possible. Tomorrow looms large—104 miles with 8,600 feet of climbing—so recovery is the name of the game right now: food, hydration, stretch, rest, repeat.

The heat brought some real challenges today, and it’s clear this journey accross the US will not be busy. But perspective matters, tonight I’m thinking of my friend Doug Kee, VP of Marion Medical Mission, who is heading to Malawi tomorrow and he’ll be there for over 2 months. He is a dedicated volunteer and serves incredibly. He introduced me to Marion Medical Mission and am grateful for his example to serve. Wishing him safe travels!

And go Lions!! (I’ll be sporting my Lions cycling jersey tomorrow).

Blessings, Pat
